Dubai: An intoxicated couple, from Myanmar, were given a reduced jail term after being convicted of having sex on Jumeirah Beach and committing an indecent act in public.
The couple, a 26-year-old salesman and a 20-year-old saleswoman, had earlier admitted having sex on the beachside and pleaded for leniency before the Dubai Court of Appeal, which Thursday overturned the initial ruling.
Presiding Judge Adnan Al Farra granted the couple a reduced punishment when he awarded them three months for having consensual sex in public and committing public indecency. The judge awarded then an additional month in jail for having liquor.
The two will be deported after serving their sentences
The Appeals Court on Thursday overturned the primary verdict – one year in jail for consensual sex and public indecency and one month in jail for consuming liquor – delivered by the Dubai Court of First Instance.
“I did consume liquor and have consensual sex with my partner, but I didn’t commit any indecency in public& there was no one watching us when we had sex on the beach,” said the salesman, L.Z…

A motorist convicted of running over a Scottish woman with his Hummer in a fit of rage has had his jail term reduced from 10 to seven years by the Dubai Appeal Court today.
The Emirati businessman, AA, 22, was convicted of the murder of Katherine Wood, 52, by the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance last November.
The appeal court today rejected an appeal filed by the victim’s husband Jeffrey Wood, who was in court today to listen to the verdict. The defendant did not appear.
“It was clear that the defendant was acting in a moment of anger and loss of control and thus the court rules out the presence of any element of premeditation,” Judge Abdelmajid al Nizami said on Nov 27 in the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance after passing the initial sentence…SOURCE

A lawyer is taking several government bodies to court over a dump in Ajman he claims is so toxic it is making nearby residents ill.
Abdel al Kumaiti, who also lives several kilometres from the site, said he represents his neighbours but stands alone in filing the legal action. He has named the Federal Environment Authority, the Ministry of Environment and Water, the Ministry of Health, and the Ajman Municipality and Planning Department in the suit.
The suit asks the Ajman Court of First Instance to appoint experts to assess the impact that the dumping and burning of toxic waste is having on people and the environment.
“First we ask that the damage be assessed, damage to the soil, the water, the air, other living creatures and of course human beings, then based on that we will determine what compensation will be suitable,” Mr al Kumaiti said yesterday.
Nearby residents say the dump has caused health problems. Mr al Kumaiti said they had contacted him to complain and ask that he take action, but later refused to put their names on the legal documents…SOURCE

Dubai: A driver has been jailed for threatening to drive a woman crazy
with the help of genies and to send her corpse back home in a body bag if she refused to marry him.
Records said the 31-year-old Tunisian woman claimed that the 47-year-old Syrian convict terrorised her and threatened to summon genies, whom he said will “intimidate her to madness before killing her and sending her to her hometown as a corpse if she didn’t marry him”.
The accused, M.S., will spend three months behind prison bars before being deported, as declared by the Dubai Court of First Instance recently.
Public Prosecution records show that M.S. appealed the initial verdict on the last day of 2008.
He was charged with threatening to kill the woman, breaching her privacy and modesty in a public place and abusing a telecommunication system, etisalat services, by repeatedly phoning her…
