12/24/2004 Entry: "Dubai Rail Project to be reality in 4 years"

DUBAI — With the time for implementation of the Dubai Rail Project approaching next year, Higher Committee has completed the administrative, financial and technical preparation for the execution of the $3.4 billion undertaking. The project, which is financed primarily by the private sector, will be completed within four years... The project is of immense significance to the emirate, as it is designed to meet the growth in population, estimated at 6.5 per cent annually. The population will increase from 1 million in the current year to 3.5 million in 2020, he explained.

With the rise in population, there will also be a proportional increase in the number of vehicles on Dubai's roads.
The first phase of the train project will cover 35 kilometres, starting from Al Rashidiya all the way to the American University in Dubai. The second phase will cover some 32 kilometres from the American University to Jebel Ali and the second line, which will be constructed from Dubai International Airport to Dubai Medical City and it, is expected to be completed by 2012. The train will transport more than 23 thousands passengers per hour... MORE
